Trip Report

Moore River Sandplain
January 2006

Sunday saw 12 vehicles (Bootlegger, Turk, Whiskers, Jurassic, Wyvern, Chui, Mingis, Airchief, Anonymous, Greybeard, Eureka and Prado1) assemble at Gingers.

After leaving the Brand Highway at Beermulla West Road, we let tyres down and proceeded through some very interesting sand plain country. Morning tea stop was at a clearing bordering the Moore River Nature Reserve and our visitors Ray and Denise provided some nice “homemade” fruitcake (made by someone).

Although it was a bit late in the year to see vast expanses of everlastings, the number of flowering species and the diversity of the vegetation was amazing. Particularly outstanding were the tall clumps of Yellow Morrison and Christmas trees still in bloom.

Lunch was at the Cowalla Bridge on the Moore River. Here we could see evidence of where recent floodwaters had quickly risen and dropped again. This region has an interesting history and at the beginning of the trip Jan gave us all some written info which was taken from the Western 4WD Days out of Perth book. This information also told us that the kangaroo tick would be on the move at this time of the year and thirsting for blood. This was of particular interest to those of us silly enough not to wear boots.

The track became sandier and the tyre pressure came down a little further. We twisted and turned through the Namming and Eneminga Nature Reserves and were all very glad that Bootlegger knew where they were going.

Our leaders finally lead us to the Cosmos / Gravity Centre for afternoon tea/ice-cream stop.

This looked like a very interesting place to return to and it was hinted that it might be a future TLCC trip in the cooler weather, so stay tuned.

It was here that we assembled for our group photo and said our farewells and our thanks to Jan and Allen for organizing a great day out. Perhaps Allen should have led us all the way back to the metro area because somebody got lost in Joondalup!!
